To Canon's credit, the buttons are clearly labelled and sensibly arranged. Flip up a small panel, and you'll find a 1.8in LCD on the underside and an array of buttons on the panel beneath it. The control panel nestles discreetly in the top-right corner of the machine. Shallow slots leading toward the cartridge bays do nothing to help you position a new cartridge correctly for insertion. The input and output trays, which unfold for use, rattle a lot and bend easily. The Pixma MP470's sleek, black-and-silver cabinet exhibits an attention to external design that fails to extend to all of the components contained within.

Ink cost per page (at 5 per cent coverage per colour) is reasonable: about 13 cents for black-only, or 26 cents for a page with all three colours plus black. The device scans and copies quickly, and the copies in particular looked quite good. Graphics took longer to print-1.5ppm to 4ppm, about average overall-and looked decent on plain paper (short on detail, a little faded) but great on costlier Canon paper (bright, crisp). The deeply black, slightly fuzzy text was certainly readable, although curvy fonts looked feathery and closely spaced type seemed mushy. It processed plain-text pages at a competent 8.7 pages per minute (ppm). The Pixma MP470 performed satisfactorily in our tests.

A quick-start guide and an HTML-based manual cover all the features thoroughly. A My Printer applet installs itself in your Windows system tray and provides the printer queue, settings, and troubleshooting info. Canon's Solution Menu dialogue box gives you one-touch access to the printer's on-screen documentation, maintenance utilities, and help files.

The software bundle includes a pair of useful, well-designed applications for editing photos and handling scanned images. Setup is easy, thanks to the inclusion of a poster illustrating basic steps and an automatic installation routine using the included CD. This compact machine offers a wide range of print, copy and scan functions in a decently designed package. The resulting images are often under-saturated, which has a particular impact on photos.Īt 24.1c per page, the MP480 is somewhat costly to run, which might sway people in favour of more expensive multifunctions that have cheaper running costs.Canon's Pixma MP470 has its quirks, but given the $149 price it's hard to complain. Though the MP480's maximum scanning resolution of 2400x4800 dots per inch is acceptable, scanning at this setting resulted in a loss of fine detail and inaccurate colours.

However, scanning quality leaves much to be desired. For family photos and school work the MP480 will do a good job - especially considering its price - and its print quality is only surpassed by competitors that cost twice as much. There is no evidence of banding or gradient problems, which is quite a feat for a unit at this price point. With photos, colours are largely vibrant but blacks are not as deep as we would have liked. Using its combined colour ink cartridge the MP480 can print colours that are vibrant if a little too bright.

Text is dark, making it readable but a little too inaccurate and blurred for professional use. Photo printing speeds aren't terrible, however, with a standard 4圆in photo printing in 34sec and an A4 photo in 1min 25sec.Īt its best, the MP480 does a reasonable job with print quality. Although draft documents print at a somewhat acceptable 6.3ppm, normal quality documents with graphics slowed to 2.9ppm. Unfortunately, colour documents don't share the same consistency when it comes to speed. Normal quality documents are significantly darker and easier to read compared to draft quality ones. Surprisingly, bumping the quality up to normal doesn't affect speed much: the unit printed documents at 7.4ppm using this setting. Standard text documents will print at an average of 8.6 pages per minute in draft quality, with the first page out in 11.7sec. The MP480 won't impress when it comes to speed.
